ScienceTokyo is a campus wireless LAN service available free of charge for research and educational purposes.

Please carefully read and agree to the terms and conditions for the use of the information infrastructure and services provided by Tokyo Institute of Science before using the service.
If violations occur, access to the information infrastructure may be suspended regardless of whether the user was aware of the violation. Further action will be handled by the university-wide or departmental information ethics committee.

  3. Enter the password STWireless.
  4. An authentication page will appear in your browser. If the authentication page does not appear, please refer to the troubleshooting section below.
Prohibited Activities

In addition to the usage agreement, the following actions are prohibited mainly for security reasons:

  • Connecting or operating servers, printers, routers, etc.
  • Using devices with unsupported operating systems (e.g., Windows XP, Windows 7)
  • Device-to-device communication (even between devices owned by the same user)
  • Allowing guests or visitors to use your account or creating accounts for them (violation of regulations)
Notes
  • Disable proxy or VPN software before connecting, and ensure that prohibited communications such as P2P are not occurring.
  • Before authentication is completed, all network communication (both on-campus and off-campus) is blocked for security reasons.
  • If the device is still in the initial setup stage, web authentication may not work and the network cannot be used.
  • Authentication is valid for 12 hours. Bypassing authentication is not allowed.
  • Please refrain from making telephone inquiries about the campus wireless LAN.
  • Devices with unsupported OS versions should not be used due to security concerns.
It is also recommended to avoid OS versions unsupported by university-wide services such as Slack, Box, or Sophos.
  • Use of services or applications is at your own responsibility.
Avoid using software or services without clear developer or provider contact information.

If the Authentication Page Does Not Appear

ScienceTokyo uses a web-based authentication method (Splash authentication).
Due to the specifications of the Meraki system, an unauthenticated client must send an HTTP GET request to a web page.

If the device fails to send this request due to configuration issues or device-specific behavior, the authentication page may not appear.

Please check the following when the authentication page does not appear:

  • Turn Wi-Fi off and on again, delete the saved "ScienceTokyo" network, or disable auto-connection to other Wi-Fi networks.
  • Disable any proxy or VPN settings on your device or browser.
  • Try connecting in a location where an access point (AP) is installed (e.g., classrooms).
  • Ensure that the OS and wireless adapter are up to date.
  • Security software (e.g., Sophos, Symantec, McAfee) may occasionally block access. Check the software logs.
  • After connecting, try entering http://escapessl.com in your browser address bar.
  • Clearing the browser cache and restarting the device may resolve the issue.
  • Device names may cause issues; try changing the device name to alphanumeric characters.

Not Supported

  • Devices that do not support Wi-Fi 4 or higher
  • Issues caused by network congestion or radio interference
  • Use outside the access point coverage area
  • Use of public DNS servers (e.g., 8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1)
  • Speed or stability problems during lectures, conferences, events, or club activities
  • Only a specific website cannot be accessed
  • Use requiring constant or highly stable connectivity for work or meetings
  • Situations where even temporary disconnection causes operational problems
  • Devices running manufacturer-unsupported OS versions
Please consider replacing your device or using an alternative.
    • Windows: versions no longer supported by Microsoft (Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10)
    • iOS: devices no longer supported by the latest iOS
    • Android: behavior varies widely depending on manufacturer and version; unconfirmed versions are not covered
    • Other environments (e.g., VMs or Ubuntu) must be handled by the user.

IP Address Assigned to Devices

Devices connected to "ScienceTokyo" are assigned addresses in the range: 10.2.0.0/16.

This address range was newly assigned as an internal university network address following the university integration.
Some campus-restricted services or websites may not yet support this address range.

If you encounter issues, please contact the administrator of the relevant service and report that you cannot connect from "ScienceTokyo", describing the symptoms in detail.

Access Areas

The campus wireless LAN can be used in various locations across campus, including shared campus areas, classrooms, meeting rooms, and campus co-op and dining areas. Support is limited to designated access areas where access points are installed.

Even if the signal can be received nearby, such use may be outside support coverage.
Wireless communication may also become unstable due to interference from microwave ovens, mobile phones, cordless devices, Bluetooth devices, or pocket Wi-Fi routers.

Communication Policy

The communication policy for "ScienceTokyo" may change depending on system configuration, security requirements, usage conditions, social circumstances, and other operational considerations. Policies are applied university-wide, and inquiries about configuration, port opening, or permission for specific services are not accepted.

  • No communication between user devices (even for the same user)
  • Running servers or printers on the campus wireless LAN is prohibited
  • Commercial use is prohibited

Before login (authentication), communication is restricted for security reasons:

  • DNS traffic is allowed
    • including public DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 1.1.1.1)
  • All other communication is blocked
    • campus websites, email, portal, and proxy services are unavailable

Use on Shared Devices

The system is designed for devices owned and managed by the individual user.

Use on shared devices is discouraged because of security risks such as information leakage, account impersonation or theft, and malware infection.

If you must use a shared device:

  • Use your own account
  • Log out of all web services after use
  • Delete forms and browsing history
  • Turn Wi-Fi off and confirm that you are logged out

These checks must be performed by the user or device administrator.

Changing Accounts / Forgotten Passwords

If you need to change your account or forgot your password, contact the office that issued your card (Personnel Division or Academic Affairs Division).

If you know the IC card PIN (6 digits), you can log in to the portal using IC card authentication on a computer with an IC card reader and reset your password. IC card reader computers are also available at the campus co-op. If you do not know the PIN or do not have access to a reader, consult the issuing office.

For in-person support, bring your device and visit the Information Infrastructure Help Desk located in the university co-op.
