PoE Switches

Meraki MS355-24X2

Used as the main switch. Deployed with the assumption of accommodating up to 20 APs.
* 4 ports are reserved for spares and uplink connections to upstream equipment.

MS120-8FP (Compact Switch)

Used as a secondary switch. Installation is limited to locations where distance constraints apply or where future connection growth is not expected, as well as locations where sufficient switch installation space is not available. The number of accommodated APs is limited to 5 or fewer.

Due to performance limitations, there is a possibility of impact on future service provisioning restrictions or communication latency. Please understand that this issue cannot be resolved until the user organization takes action (securing the space and covering all costs).

Access Points

Meraki MR44

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) compatible model. Provides 2 streams on 2.4 GHz and 4 streams on 5 GHz. * Note: The client device (PC, smartphone, tablet) must also support Wi-Fi 6.

Licenses

Cisco Meraki License Specification

This university adopts the co-term licensing model, in which expiration dates are unified across the entire university. When a new license is added to existing active licenses, the expiration dates are averaged, resulting in a single unified expiration date.
* We do not adopt a per-device licensing model where each device has its own expiration date. Because expiration dates are averaged across the entire university, the resulting expiration date will not equal the purchase date plus the license period.

Each AP and switch requires a corresponding license (for a period extending beyond March 31, 2028). Each license includes a product warranty and access to technical support for the corresponding period.

About License Renewal (After March 31, 2028)

In principle, we will make efforts to secure the budget required for license renewal of all equipment composing the campus wireless LAN. (Approved by the Network Special Committee in March 2023) However, depending on university policy or in cases where budget cannot be secured, the administrative unit responsible for the installation location may be asked to bear the cost. We will provide updates as developments arise.

When planning, please consider not only the expected number of users and the necessity, but also be aware that there is a possibility of future renewal cost burdens.

LAN Cables

For New Cable Installation
  • Cat6 or higher, PoE-capable
  • Cable length from AP to switch should be within 80m as a guideline
  • Cable colors
    • From AP to rack: white
    • Patch cables from in-rack patch panel to switch: pink
  • Labeling
    • Cable ends: Attach tags showing the AP hostname at all connection points (AP, rack, patch panel, switch, etc.)
    • Patch panel: AP hostname
  • Installed cables must be terminated into wireless LAN-dedicated patch panels
    • When instructed by the NOC, new patch panels must also be purchased and installed
    • If a wireless-dedicated patch panel cannot be installed due to space constraints, please consult with us
For Using Existing LAN Cables

When reusing existing LAN cables due to budget or cabling-route circumstances, the user organization is responsible for verification and management. We only accept such arrangements when the organization acknowledges the possibility of malfunctions or service limitations.

  • The user organization is responsible for identifying the cabling route and the cables
  • Verify that cables are Cat6 or higher
  • When Cat5e is used, the managing organization shall bear the repair costs in the event of age-related deterioration or malfunction
  • Verify cable ends (room side, switch side, etc.) and attach tags
  • Depending on the standard and wiring conditions, the cable may be unusable or subject to service limitations
Patch Cables
  • Category: Cat6 or higher
  • Color: White between AP and PP (patch panel), pink between PP and switch
  • Thickness: Slim (4mm)
  • Length: 1m as standard (varies by location)

Other Equipment

D-Link Extender

Used in locations where installation space is even more constrained than for compact switches (1 location as of January 2023). Considering points of failure and management costs, deployment is not permitted except under special circumstances.
