About Maintenance

When maintenance is to be performed, we announce it on this website or on @ScienceTokyoNOC; please check these channels. Maintenance is generally performed during scheduled power outages at each campus or during late-night hours.

About Network Outages

Once an outage is confirmed, the NOC takes the following actions in sequence:

  1. Identification of the failed equipment and the scope of impact
    * If we judge that the outage affects the entire university or has significant impact, we post notifications and issue announcements.
  2. Recovery actions
  3. If the issue is not resolved, we contact the organization managing the room or the responsible administrative group to request action.

Basic Workflow

01. Identification of the failed equipment and scope of impact
The NOC investigates where the outage is occurring. Depending on the situation, we may ask the person who submitted the inquiry or the administrative group managing that location for cooperation.

02. Recovery actions
We perform recovery work remotely. If a switch malfunction is strongly suspected, the NOC will handle equipment replacement, port changes, and similar actions.

03. On-site response (user organization)
If recovery actions by the NOC do not resolve the issue, the outage may be caused by a malfunction of an individual AP or cable.

When remote response does not resolve the symptoms, we will contact the responsible administrative group, and each organization should take action accordingly.
Please coordinate within your organization and perform on-site verification (checking for equipment abnormalities or whether cables have been disconnected). We will send replacement equipment as needed, so please carry out the equipment replacement. If service is not restored even after replacing the AP, the cable is likely the cause. Please have the user organization handle this.

Please do not touch the switch port side. Doing so may expand the scope of the outage.

If your organization cannot handle this internally, please understand that campus wireless LAN service near the affected AP will remain unavailable until the issue is resolved through one of the following:

  • The organization managing the location requests action from facilities or an external vendor (all costs borne by the organization)
  • If the NOC secures budget, we will consider addressing the issue around the end of the year as a target

About On-site Response

When a communication issue is confirmed, the NOC performs remote response as described above. If this does not restore service, we will contact the responsible administrative group; please have each organization perform on-site verification.

Points to Check
  • The AP is at the installation location
    • Please verify the installation location using internal documents within your organization. As a general rule, we ask that APs be installed in visually verifiable positions.
    • If an AP is installed in a hard-to-verify location, such as above the ceiling, this is at the organization's request. Each organization is responsible for handling it.
    • No abnormalities such as dirt, damage, or loss
  • LAN cable
    • Whether the cable on the AP side is disconnected or loose
    • Whether renovations or other work have affected the cable. If twisting or strong loads were applied during routing, communication may be affected.

Once you have completed the above, please report the results. If service is not restored, we will send a replacement to the responsible administrative group, and each organization should perform the AP replacement.

About Radio Interference

Compared to wired LAN, wireless LAN offers greater flexibility in where it can be used, but users may experience issues such as "slow speed," "unstable communication," or "sudden disconnection." Not only for campus wireless LAN APs, but also when each organization installs and uses wireless LAN routers or other wireless devices, please understand the characteristics of radio waves and interference, and exercise caution.

If radio interference is suspected, each organization is responsible for investigation and response.
